It s about time someone took a stand against Reddit for the inflammatory, harmful posts on the site. Our hero? Um, Russia?
Roskomandazor, the Kremlin s equivalent to the FCC, is taking issue with a particularly drug-laden subreddit, and feels that a thread on how to grow narcotics has gone too far.
Announced in a post on Russian social media, Roskomandazor, acting at the behest of Russia s Federal Drug Control Service, according to a TechCrunch report. If the site does not comply, it threatened to shut down all access to the site in Russia. But it doesn t seem like Reddit is playing ball, as Russia hasn t gotten a response, despite this oddly phrased request:
Those who have contacts with the [Reddit] administration – ask them to check their email for messages from Roskomnadzor, otherwise… a number of operators may block the entire site, the post said.
Given the recent controversies with Reddit and censorship, the San Francisco company has recently laid out what type of content is prohibited, and it doesn t seem like the post breaks any rules. Posts containing anything illegal… things that are actually illegal, such as copyrighted material will be removed, but posts that are discussing illegal activities, such as drug use will not.
To get a sense of Russia s moral compass and history with blocking websites, recently Russia issued a call to lovers of freedom of speech to turn to Russian social media instead of Facebook, The Kremlin also just doesn t seem to like drugs, as they previously blocked Wikipedia for an article on cannabis smoking.
