Twitter thinks that live-video streaming is the next big tech craze and now so does Facebook.
Months after Twitter purchased the live-video streaming app Periscope, the world s most popular social network announced it was allowing public figures to stream live video through the Facebook Mentions app.
Live is an immersive and authentic way to connect with the public figures you care about, in real-time, wrote Vadim Lavrusik, a product manager at Facebook wrote in a blog post Wednesday.
Fans of musicians, politicians, actors and more will be able to watch, comment and share the live videos through their News Feed.
Dwayne The Rock Johnson, Serena Williams, Luke Bryan, Ricardo Kaká, Ashley Tisdale, Lester Holt, Martha Stewart, Michael Bublé are just some of the celebrities who plan to stream live video, Facebook said.
Live-video streaming started to gain popularity after Meerkat launched in February. Twitter then announced in March that it purchased the live-video streaming app Periscope for an undisclosed amount.
During the first 10 days of Periscope s launch, about 1 million people signed into the app, ex-Twitter CEO Dick Costolo said in April during the company s first quarter earnings.
The company also streamed its second-quarter earnings call on the app for the first time last week.
