Intel and Micron Technology said Tuesday they ve come up with a new class of memory chips that s a thousand times faster than anything of its kind available today.

Calling it a breakthrough technology, and the first new chip of its type in 25 years, the two companies said the new 3D XPoint chip is the product of a decade of research and development.

They re positioning it as an answer to a growing problem of accessing the growing mountains of data gathered by mobile phones, computers, sensors and other devices.

The chip allows for quick access to enormous data sets and enables entirely new applications, said Micron president Mark Adams.

The new chip is a type called non-volatile memory in which data can be stored, erased and replaced with new data.
