A series of high-level management changes were announced by Intel today, starting with the departure of President Renee James for “an external CEO role.”

James wrote in a memo to employees that after Brian Krzanich became CEO of Intel, ” I knew then that being the leader of a company was something that I desired as part of my own leadership journey. Now is the right time for me to take that next step.”

She did not name her new employer. She has been with Intel for 28 years.

Krzanich thanked James for signing on as president two years ago when he took over as CEO. “Renée’s work as President has helped to prepare Intel for even greater success in the future,” he said in a memo announcing the management changes.

Also stepping aside is Intel Capital’s long-time President Arvind Sodhani, who will retire in January after a 35-year career with Intel. A mergers and acquisitions group will be merged into Intel Capital, which will be headed now by Wendell Brooks, who has led the m&a group.

The company’s McAfee Divison will be absorbed into an Intel Security Group under the group’s general manager Chris Young. A reorganized New Technology Group will be headed by Josh Walden, who previously managed Intel’s Platform Engineering Group.

Intel Communication and Devices Group General Manager Aicha Evans is being moved up to the company’s Management Committee.

Intel executives Hermann Eul and Mike Bell will leave the company after a transition period.
