Apple has sold 2.79 million Apple Watches, and nearly 17% of consumers are buying an extra band, according to a report by Reuters.

Seventy-seven percent of Apple Watch sales — well over 2 million — have been for the $49 entry-level band. Nearly 50 percent of those consumers are sporting the black sport band, with the second most purchased color being white (18 percent), and the least popular being green (only 3 percent). About 5 percent of consumers purchased their Apple Watch with the priciest link bracelet band, which adds $449 to the overall cost. The least purchased band, with only 0.01 percent — less than 200 consumers — is the bright red modern buckle that only comes with the most expensive 18-karat yellow gold watch, retailing at $17,000.

About 17 percent of consumers have also purchased a second band, with the black sport band once again being the most popular, and in the second place is the Milanese loop band, which costs $149. The desire for multiple bands shows that consumers may have spent more on the product than they originally thought, and multiple bands allow the user to mix and and match depending on their outfits, giving the product a more personal and fashionable feel.

Slice Intelligence, which mines email receipts from a panel of 2 million consumers, provided the data to Reuters.

Though the Sport band costs 49$, it costs apple only $2.05 to make, not including shipping and packaging, research firm IHS told Reuters.
