Intel is folding its New Devices Group into a New Technology Group in a move that may reflect unhappiness with its push into wearable devices and other gadgets.
The new group, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, will address a variety of research and development efforts.
Long-time Intel executive Josh Walden will head the new technology group. Mike Bell, who headed the now defunct New Devices Group and headed its push into wearable devices, is being reassigned.
The new group combines several research efforts at Intel into one organization, with a goal of driving greater synergies in new and developing technology areas, according to an Intel spokeswoman, who declined further comment.
Intel has made a big push into wearable devices, buying Basis, a smartwatch company, last year, and introducing a health bracelet, smart earbuds and even a shirt with wearable tech.
Intel CEO Brian Krzanich has made wearables a key business push, with a goal of making everything smart.
The new group includes Intel Labs, which does resarch and development; Perceptual Computing Group, which handles emerging tech like Intel s Realsense technology; the New Business Intiatives Organization; and the New Devices Group.
