San Jose s Tech Museum of Innovation got some prestigious recognition on Tuesday, winning a National Medal for Museum and Library Service.

The Tech is one of 10 winners of this year s awards, which are given annually by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a federal agency that awards grants and provides research help to museums and libraries. Considered to be the country s top honor for such institutions, the National Medal awards recognize five libraries and five museums that present extraordinary and innovative approaches to public service to make a difference for individuals, families, and communities, according to the institute.

We would like to thank the South Bay residents who have never wavered in their commitment to The Tech. We share this honor with you, Tim Ritchie, The Tech s CEO, said in a statement.

The award will be presented at a ceremony on May 18 in Washington, D.C. Ritchie said he will attend the ceremony with Maria Arias Evans, the principal of San Jose s Washington Elementary School whose students regularly visit The Tech on field trips.

The Tech, which opened its doors 25 years ago, was one of two California award winners. The Los Angeles Public Library also won a National Medal.
