Following a report in a Chinese newspaper that it was laying off 30 percent of its China workforce, Tesla confirmed a restructuring of its workforce there that involves eliminating some positions.

Gary Tao, a local spokesman, confirmed the report in the Chinese newspaper Economic Observer on Monday, according to Bloomberg, although he didn t say how many jobs would be trimmed.

The Observer reported that the Palo Alto electric car maker would trim 160 positions from its workforce of 600.

The purpose is to better respond to the Chinese market, Tao told Bloomberg. The team remains stable and strong.

Tesla started selling its battery-powered cars in China last year. The workforce reduction began earlier this year, according to the report.
