Yahoo experienced some growth in its search share at Google s expense, according to new metrics by StatCounter.

Google dropped to 75.2 percent of U.S. search referrals last month from 77.3 percent in November, reporting the lowest monthly share since StatCounter began tracking in 2008.

Yahoo, while still the third-place underdog, shot up to 10.4 from 8.6 percent of American searches, apparently stealing a chunk of referrals from its giant Mountain View rival when Mozilla made Yahoo the default search engine for Firefox users.

Second-place Bing was largely unchanged, hovering at around 12.5 percent.

Yahoo declined to publicly celebrate its score Wednesday, noting that it does not comment on third-party metrics.
