Tens of thousands of people chimed in on what Mark Zuckerberg’s personal challenge for 2015 should be, as I wrote last week.
The Facebook CEO has decided.
His resolution is something antithetical to the fast twitch culture of social media: He will read a book every other week, as he announced on his Facebook page.
And shades of Oprah Winfrey, Zuckerberg is starting a book club, called “A Year of Books,” with a Facebook page where he and others can discuss that week’s tome. The books will have an “emphasis on learning about different cultures, beliefs, histories and technologies.”
The book club may offer more insight into Zuckerberg. Here’s what he says about the first book, “The End of Power” by Moises Naim:
The only rule to the book club is actually read the book before offering one’s opinions, Zuckerberg wrote.
Now, of course, the book suggestions are rolling in. Individual authors understandably are using the page to pitch their own works.
As a book club refugee, I make one small suggestion. Please don’t pick “The Kite Runner” or “The God of Small Things” as two commenters have suggested. For such a visible endeavor as Zuckerberg’s, there would be something dispiriting about reading the hot bestsellers from a decade or two ago.
