“I feel like there’s a colossal mess coming.”

Michael Drobac, executive director of the Small UAV Coalition, on expected upcoming drone regulations. The drone industry had hoped the rules would provide a boost to commercial drones. But according to unnamed sources cited by the Wall Street Journal, the rules include requiring a pilot’s license for operating a commercial drone. In addition, drones would only be allowed to fly during the day and would have to stay under 400 feet. All drones weighing less than 55 pounds would be subject to the same rules. The Federal Aviation Administration, which has grappled with safety concerns surrounding drones for the past several years, is expected to unveil the regulations at the end of the year, and adoption is expected to take another year or two.
