A team of Chilean students has won the Intel Foundation s 10th annual Global Challenge, a competition that encourages student entrepreneurs to tackle important issues through computing technology.

The team from the University of Chile and a local cancer research center – dubbed Lab4U – developed a technology that turns a mobile phone into a device that can prepare, analyze and share lab results, according to an Intel press release.

The Santa Clara chipmaker also awarded $15,000 prizes to these teams for their innovations:

Neuron Guard of Italy for developing technology to help prevent brain damage after a stroke and other trauma.

Karisma Kidz of the United Kingdom for its Moodville mobile-game application to help children manage their moods.

Servtech of Taiwan for inventing a technology to help factories detect equipment anomalies.

Plaze of Lebanon for its innovative social-media concept.
