In a field of squat and clunky smartwatches, Apple s timepiece easily tops the best-dressed list. But it may soon face some competition for the fashion crown.

LVMH, which owns high fashion brands such as Louis Vuitton and Givenchy, is considering joining forces with a tech company to offer a smartwatch, according to the Wall Street Journal.

There are some talks taking place about a partnership, Jean-Claude Biver, president of LVMH s watch division, told the newspaper. Maybe in nine months, we will have a smartwatch.

Apple was not the first to design a smartwatch, but its offering has put considerable pressure on makers of traditional timepieces to digitize their offerings. Rapper Will.i.am even revealed a smartwatch of his own, dubbed Puls, earlier this week.

Biver sounded rather conflicted about the smartwatch category during his interview with the Journal. He said Swiss luxury brand Hublot would not offer a smartwatch, though LVMH has other watch brands.

A smartwatch is very difficult for us because it is contradictory, Biver told the Journal. Luxury is supposed to be eternal … How do you justify a $2,000 smart watch whose technology will become obsolete in two years?

Rolling up his sleeves to who off a white Apple Watch at yesterday s iPad event, Apple CEO Tim Cook sounded positively bullish about the category. According to Cook, the Apple Watch is still scheduled to debut early next year.

Every day I look forward to that day, he told the audience at Apple s Town Hall auditorium.
