The Internet is awash with websites and related parts called sub-domains that are chockablock with nasty malware, a new study has discovered.

The report by Sunnyvale security firm Blue Coat Systems said these so-called one-day web wonders help crooks set up botnets, which are privately owned computers that hackers have secretly hijacked and use to spread viruses, spam or other malicious software to other computers.

Most one-day wonders are legitimate, set up for various temporary purposes, the study noted. But they re also popular with cyber criminals, because they make it more likely that some percentage will be missed by security controls.
