Someone broke into the Menlo Park office of venture capital powerhouse Kleiner Perkins last month and took off with laptops containing some people s social security numbers and other sensitive financial details.

The company disclosed the theft in an Aug. 13 letter to the New Hampshire Attorney General, because one person whose data might have been affected lives in that state. Kleiner Perkins officials could not immediately be reached for comment and it s unclear if people from other states, including California, also might have been exposed.

The incident occurred over the July 19-20 weekend at the company s office at 2750 Sand Hill Road. During the theft, several laptops were stolen from our premises, including two password-protected laptops used by personnel in our finance department, according to the letter to New Hampshire authorities. These personnel have access in the course of their duties to personal information, such as name, contact information, social security numbers and financial accounts information.

Noting that it is bolstering its security and cooperating with police investigating the case, the company added that we have no knowledge that any information has been or will be misused as a result of the break-in.

Menlo Park police could not immediately be reached for comment.
