Meet the Galaxy Alpha – Samsung s first metal smartphone.

The South Korean electronics giant introduced on Wednesday its newest smartphone, which will soon hit stores. Samsung s announcement sets the stage for a fresh sales war with Apple, which is expected to unveil the iPhone 6 next month.

Samsung stubbornly stuck to plastic phones for years, but the Galaxy Alpha will have a hard metal frame, matching Apple s offerings. But Apple, which famously accused Samsung of copying in high-profile patent trials, may well take a page from the South Korean company s playbook as well this fall. With its next offerings, Apple is widely expected to give consumers phones with significantly larger screens, a move Samsung and other smartphone manufacturers made years ago.

Samsung raves on its website that the Galaxy Alpha is more than just smart inside. The phone, which is less than 7 millimeters thick, also boasts an advanced camera and extended battery life, according to Samsung.

Despite the Galaxy Alpha s sleek exterior, the phone has some lower-end features, likely putting it in the mid-tier category, CNet reported.

It feels very much like an experiment to me, like so many other Samsung devices in the past, Jackdaw Research analyst Jan Dawson told CNET.
