Quoted: Elon Musk unveils Dragon V2, a commercial, reusable, manned spacecraft

“If an aircraft is thrown away with each flight, nobody will be able to fly or very few (can). The same is true with rockets and spacecraft.”

Elon Musk, SpaceX CEO, as he unveiled a reusable manned spacecraft Thursday night. The Dragon V2 — a sequel to the first version, which has ferried cargo to the International Space Station — can carry up to seven passengers and provide a “potential dramatic reduction of the cost of access to space,” Musk said during the live-streamed presentation at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, Calif.

Musk, who as we’ve written founded SpaceX because of “dismay” over the state of the American space program, is fighting hard for the success of his company: Complaining of a Boeing-Lockheed monopoly on satellite launches, he sued the Air Force last month, among other things saying others weren’t allowed to compete for a big contract, and that SpaceX could launch satellites at a lower cost than the Boeing-Lockheed alliance (ULA) could. (And he pointed out that ULA rockets use Russian-made engines. He has also mentioned to U.S. politicians that the United States shouldn’t be “thumbing rides” from the Russians. )

“Elon Musk is a genuine outsider,” Loren Thompson, an analyst with the Lexington Institute and a consultant to companies including Lockheed, told Bloomberg. “He is a disruptive influence who will probably change the way business is done in the space sector.”

What genius though up naming a rocket V2? When asked how the ride is, Musk replied “It’s da bomb!”

This looks a whole lot like the DC-X (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McDonnell_Douglas_DC-X) that was developed by McDonnel-Douglas in the 90s in Huntington Beach. Probably a few Mac-Dac people working for Mr. Musk on this one I would guess.

Brilliant great visionary Mr. Musk saved man space travel for the United States.
