Quoted: Porn empire says hello, Big Data

“I shouldn’t think anyone would really be interested in that. Who would want to buy data pertaining to whether somebody likes bondage or spanking?”

Peter Acworth, founder of Kink.com, a San Francisco porn empire, on using Big Data to find out more information about his customers. The push to use data analytics — amid what is an apparent decline in customers who pay for porn as free options proliferate — is meant to improve Kink’s offerings, he says. (Also, there’s that whole problem of people not wanting to use their credit cards to pay for porn.) Acworth tells NPR that the data wouldn’t be sold to outside advertisers. But an analyst says porn-site visitors are often tracked by third-party ad companies.
