Hewlett-Packard shedding more workers

Palo Alto tech giant Hewlett-Packard, which has been struggling financially in recent years and is under pressure to cut costs,  is taking a bigger whack at its giant workforce than has previously been reported.

HP had said in July that it was cutting 29,000 jobs, a number then widely reported  in the media. But at the time, the company also said the total let go through October 2014 could vary by 15 percent.

In October, HP alerted analysts the cuts would likely “end up near the high-end” of that estimate, but it didn’t specify an actual number until Monday. That’s when it disclosed in a regulatory filing that the workforce reduction would total 34,000 “due to continued market and business pressures.”

Even with the cuts, HP will still have the most employees of any Bay Area company. It said it had about 317,500 employees worldwide as of October 31, its most recent tally of its total workforce.
