Twitter tops tech workplaces in Glassdoor survey

Move over, Facebook. Twitter was the top tech company to work for this year, unseating Facebook from its throne for the past three years. The San Francisco microblogging company also was ranked No. 2 overall on the list of 50 best companies to work, a new survey says.

According to the 2014 Glassdoor annual survey of employees, Twitter is “an exceptionally transparent place,” has “the ideal balance of fun and very cool work,” and is “charting [its] own course.” So yes, besides the newly public company’s soaring stock price, its employees also are happy about “food… drinks, unbelievable perks!”

The top-scoring tech companies were of the social persuasion. LinkedIn also leaped ahead of Facebook in this latest survey, coming in as the No. 2 tech company and No. 3 overall. Facebook was the No. 3 tech company and No. 5 overall.

Other Bay Area tech companies and their rankings on the overall list:

  • Guidewire Software, No. 6
  • Google, No. 8
  • Riverbed Technology, No. 17
  • SolarCity, No. 18
  • Intuit, No. 19
  • Genentech, No. 25
  • Intel, No. 33
  • Apple, No. 35
  • NetApp, No. 41
  • eBay, No. 49
  •, No. 50

The other Bay Area company among the top 50 was Chevron, which came in at No. 14.

The anonymous employee quotes about the top tech workplaces had a common theme: perks. At LinkedIn: scooters, food, group fitness classes. At Facebook: chiropractor, acupuncture. At Google: good food. At Intuit: work-life balance.
Twitter, eBay, SolarCity and Guidewire appeared on the list for the first time.

The survey is based on more than 500,000 employee reviews submitted to Glassdoor over the past year.
