Quoted: eBay CEO talks same-day delivery and newspaper trucks

“I think it’ll be an economical service to offer. There’s a lot of excess delivery capacity in every city. … (Such as) newspaper trucks.”

John Donahoe, eBay CEO, on his company’s growing push into same-day — even one-hour — delivery. He told Bloomberg Businessweek that mobile-to-mobile delivery “allows enormous efficiencies.” The San Jose company launched its same-day delivery service, eBay Now, last year. It has competition, including from Walmart, Google and startups such as Shutl, Heather Somerville wrote for SiliconBeat earlier this year. (By the way, she did a ride-along in March with an eBay Now employee in San Francisco, who filled orders by going to the store to buy what customers need, and deliver it within an hour.) Donahoe said this type of service gives people what they want: “It’s not for all their transactions. It’s for some: I just landed in New York, and I forgot my iPhone charger. I don’t want to have to find a store to buy it. I want it delivered to me so I can get my phone charged.”
