SAN FRANCISCO —  Square, the mobile payments company, on Wednesday introduced an online marketplace that could mean more competition for Internet merchants such as eBay (EBAY).

Square Market is a platform for businesses to sell everything from handmade jewelry and furniture to yoga classes and salon services. Businesses can use the Square app on a smartphone or tablet to sell their goods, process payments and potentially reach new customers by expanding beyond brick-and-mortar confines.

Companies large and small can sell for free on the Square Market, although the mobile platform caters to neighborhood businesses that can’t afford to build a website but need one to ship products worldwide, the company said. Among the early sellers on Square Market are several small Bay Area merchants, Oakland-based men’s clothing store Standard and Strange and San Francisco furniture design company Victor Goods.

Square is headquartered in San Francisco and was created in 2009 by Jack Dorsey, who also founded Twitter. Shop Square Market at squareup.com/market.
