Tesla's 90-second battery pack swap

Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk took to the stage at Tesla’s design studio in Hawthorne Thursday to show off the company’s latest innovation: battery pack swapping in 90 seconds.

I wasn’t there in person, but it was showmanship at its finest. Here’s the video:

Musk is determined to convince the masses that driving an electric vehicle can be as convenient as driving a car with an internal combustion engine. To prove the point, Tesla “raced” someone filling up an Audi at a gas station. In the time that it took to fill up the gas tank, Tesla swapped batteries on two cars.

Model S owners will now have two options when they pull into a Tesla station: free fast-charging, or battery swapping for a fee.
