Quoted: Tumblr CEO talks 'awesome' Yahoo deal

“Before touching on how awesome this is, let me try to allay any concerns: We’re not turning purple.”

David Karp, Tumblr CEO, on Yahoo’s $1.1 billion purchase of the popular blogging site, which was confirmed this morning. The all-cash deal keeps the company in New York, and Karp said everything from the team to the “roadmap” is staying the same. In her announcement on Tumblr, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer had the same message: “We promise not to screw it up.  Tumblr is incredibly special and has a great thing going.” As there usually is when a much larger company buys a startup, there is some skepticism about the deal, especially as some recall Yahoo’s more than $3 billion purchase of GeoCities, “the Tumblr of its time,” during the dot-com boom. But perhaps to reassure his staff that the irreverence would continue, Karp signed off his announcement with an expletive, followed by a “yeah.”
