Quoted: on confusing hashtags and Margaret Thatcher’s death

“Some people are in a frenzy over the hashtag #nowthatchersdead. It’s ‘Now Thatcher’s dead’. Not, ‘Now that Cher’s dead’ JustSayin’. ”

Comedian Ricky Gervais’ tweet Monday, after some tweeps thought Cher had died instead of Margaret Thatcher. Granted, the two women have some things in common, including being known for their toughness. Thatcher, the former British prime minister, was also known as the Iron Lady, but she died after suffering a stroke. As for superstar Cher, she posted a picture, among other tweets, Monday. Those 140 characters Twitter allows do have their limits. How to avoid such confusion: NPR points to a tweet that advocates for capital letters in hashtags, such as “NowThatcherIsDead.”
