Burger King Twitter account hacked

Burger King is the butt of a Whopper of a joke.

Burger King’s Twitter account was hacked Monday to look like the fast-food restaurant had just been purchased by rival McDonald’s. First sign of the hack — the fast food restaurant’s Twitter picture changed to a McDonald’s logo and the account tweeted:

“We just got sold to McDonalds! Look for McDonalds in a hood near you.”

Hackers also posted a string of obscene and racist tweets, and messages saying employees were using drugs.

The public affairs snafu comes just two weeks after traces of horsemeat were found in some beef patties made at Burger King’s European facilities, a discovery that incited outrage among customers.

The hacked account appears to have been suspended. No response yet from Miami-based Burger King.

The identity of the hackers hasn’t yet been confirmed, but Anonymous appears to be taking credit. The hacking group tweeted just before 10 a.m. PST:  “We’re guessing the @BurgerKing social media team is having a bad day…”

Anonymous also tweeted that the hacking increased Burger King’s Twitter following by 30 percent.

McDonald’s official Twitter account and the social media specialist for Wendy’s offered a bit of sympathy for their rival’s Twitter woes.
