Quoted: predicting the decline of Anonymous

“Due to many uncoordinated and unclear operations and false claims, the Anonymous hacktivist movement will slow down in 2013. Anonymous’ level of technical sophistication has stagnated and its tactics are better understood by its potential victims, and as such, the group’s level of success will decline.”

from McAfee’s annual Threat Predictions report, which it released Thursday. The Next Web says McAfee doesn’t appear to have data to back up its claim, so it says the security company’s “conclusions are merely conjecture.” Ars Technica points to some high-profile work by Anonymous this year, including the leaking of an FBI conference call about Anonymous, and an attack on WikiLeaks, the whistleblower website it once strongly defended. And in an ode to the hacktivist group, a Salon writer mentions Anonymous’ action against the Westboro Baptist Church — which planned to protest at the funeral of the Sandy Hook Elementary principal killed in the mass school shooting in Newtown, Conn. — to contend that “particularly for the young,” Anonymous “is the conscience of the Internet.”
