Chip sales drop from year ago

Global semiconductor sales for the year are on track to be well below what they were in 2011, according to market research firm IHS.

Microchip revenue is expected to total $303 billion, down 2.3 percent from the $310 billion rung up last year, the firm said Friday.

Noting that chip sales in 2011 had increased 1.3 percent over 2010, IHS said the reversal this year “is indicative of how distressing conditions have become for the industry.”

While cautioning that the final sales tally for 2012 could worsen, depending on what happens in December, IHS added that chip shipments are expected to improve next year.
