‘Tis the Season for Consumerism: now there’s “Green Tuesday”

This is the time of year when journalists try to come up with a new and exciting way to cover the day-after-Thanksgiving shopping ritual known as Black Friday. Or Small Business Saturday. Or Cyber Monday.

Now I’ve been reminded that the Tuesday after Thanksgiving has been declared “Green Tuesday” by Jonah Mytro, the co-founder of the daily deals website GreenDeals.org, which launched two years ago. (Among the current deals:  35 percent off a 6-pack of Kopali Organics Chocolate Covered Banana)

Green Tuesday encourages holiday shoppers to make “eco-minded” choices and seek out fair-trade, sustainable, and artisanal products.

“We are hoping Green Tuesday results in something of a paradigm shift,” said Mytro in a press release.  “Our goal is to encourage a different way of thinking about holiday shopping — one that’s more deliberate, more purposeful and one that will inspire consumers to  shop with the planet in mind when there’s a greener form of a gift you were already planning to purchase.”

Of all the Thanksgiving week holidays, I’ve always been a fan of Adbusters’ Buy Nothing Day. I’ll be at home, eating leftovers and playing Scrabble.
