Death of John McAfee’s dogs a mystery

Three dogs belonging to antivirus creator John McAfee on the Belizean island of Ambergris Caye were poisoned Friday, two days before McAfee’s neighbor was discovered two doors down dead of a gunshot wound to the back of the head.

It’s unclear who poisoned McAfee’s dogs, but that is part of the culture on Ambergris Caye, said Mary Hawthorne, a current volunteer and past board member of the local Humane Society.

“People have done it before,” Hawthorne said. “People have been bitten or attacked and taken matters into their own hand. It does happen. To find out who did it is another thing.”

In fact, the local San Pedro Town council periodically orders unleashed animals to be poisoned in the heart of town, but not in the more rural community north of town where McAfee has a beachfront compound of homes, Hawthorne said.
