Quoted: John McAfee on being wanted in Belize

“They will kill me if they find me.”

John McAfee, founder of antivirus software maker McAfee, tells Wired that police will kill him if they catch him. McAfee is in hiding, sought in connection with the slaying of fellow American expatriate Gregory Viant Faull, his neighbor, who was found dead Sunday. The Merc’s Dan Nakaso reports that Belize police say McAfee — whom San Pedro Town Mayor Daniel Guerrero calls “a good person” — is “a person of interest.” McAfee, a former engineer for Lockheed, left Silicon Valley in the early 1990s after the Santa Clara-based McAfee went public. Intel announced it was buying the company in 2010. Earlier this year, Belize authorities raided McAfee’s property after a tip that he was running an illegal drug lab, according to the Wall Street Journal. They found guns, ammunition, chemistry equipment and cash, but he was not charged. McAfee tells Wired he thinks the police poisoned his dogs, and that whoever killed Faull might have meant to kill him.
