Quoted: on China blocking the New York Times

“This is what they do: they get mad, they block you.”

Rebecca MacKinnon of the New America Foundation, on China blocking access to the New York Times online after the newspaper published a damning article about the Chinese prime minister’s hidden wealth, including how his family supposedly became rich during his leadership. The NYT says the government is also blocking mentions of Prime Minister Wen Jiabao on Weibo, China’s Twitter-like service. The Guardian points out that the Chinese government in June blocked access to Bloomberg after it ran articles about the assets of the family of Xi Jinping, who is expected to become president of China next year.

This was predictable as the sun rising in the east. China does this all the time. Block bad news that will hurt the regime. However, as bad as this seems, I suspect that our own government would do this if they had the ability. You laugh, but keep chipping away at our rights, such as the FISA bill, and it can and will happen here.
