Customers line up for Windows 8 at Microsoft store in Palo Alto

The first Microsoft customer arrived at the Palo Alto store at 3 a.m. — seven hours before it opened — in anticipation of the Windows 8 and Surface tablet launch. By 10 a.m., when the doors opened, almost 60 customers were in line. Some said they passed the pre-dawn hours by discussing Halloween costumes, drinking Starbucks and dancing.

Takashi Kusumi’s patience was awarded when he won an Xbox 360 in a raffle for customers awaiting the Windows 8 release on Friday. Kusumi, of Tokyo, joined a line of more than 40 customers outside the Palo Alto Microsoft store. The Yahoo Japan employee, visiting Silicon Valley on business, said he plans to buy the new Surface tablet.
