Simon Pope, an Apple spokesman, emailed a statement to reporters regarding the growing criticism of the new maps that are part of iOS6. The hue and cry have gotten so bad, the complaints have gone viral, spawning their own Tumblr of iOS6 map fails.
Simon defended the maps (surprise!):
“Customers around the world are upgrading to iOS 6 with over 200 new features including Apple Maps, our first map service. We are excited to offer this service with innovative new features like Flyover and Siri integration, and free turn by turn navigation. We launched this new map service knowing that it is a major initiative and we are just getting started with it. We are continuously improving it, and as Maps is a cloud-based solution, the more people use it, the better it will get. We’re also working with developers to integrate some of the amazing transit apps in the App Store into iOS Maps. We appreciate all of the customer feedback and are working hard to make the customer experience even better.”
From the folks behind the Tumblr, he’s a video explaining why the Apple maps aren’t so sweet:

This is a clear sign that Apple has changed. Jobs would have never released anything like this. The quality of this software blows my mind and the excuse of “we’re just getting started” doesn’t begin to cut it. Apple under jobs would have perfected Maps before ever releasing it to the public. This is Apple being an arrogant ass in their “war” with android and blatantly disregarding consumer experience in favor of their own business agenda. Apple under Cook will never be the same, we are now seeing his true colors. I despise what this company has become.

I honestly don’t think it’s that bad. I mean, judging by the images, they were taken no more than a year ago. I base this off the fact that our school got an addition added about a year ago and this is seen finished in the imagery. So for them so take pictures of the entire world and release it in less than a year, I would expect this sort of quality. I know it will improve though, because about 11 years ago the iPod didn’t even have a color screen, never mind the ability to say “give me directions to…” so poor map image quality will most likely be fixed in the foreseeable future.

We don’t know what happened when the Google maps contract expired. Did Apple drop Google maps because they vwere angry about Android? Or did Google put restrictions in a new contract Apple couldn’t live with.
I’ve read speculation either way.
