Career coaches - helpful or full of hype?

Our latest installment in the Pink Slip 2.0 series this morning drew a lot of comments - both praising the three coaches we had paired up with Elise, Roopa and Kris, and blasting their advice as irrelevant tripe.

One woman wrote to say:

The series on pink slips in the “San Jose Mercury,” may help some individuals,
but we need to get real. The voice of experience will provide some perspectives, for
review, please.

Cheerlead and turn cartwheels, as a people, all you want–when the applications
are 100-1 (100 applications versus 1 job position), there will be at least 99 runner-ups.

Volunteer all you want, but the truth is that jobs are needed to put food on the table. Volunteerism is fine, when as a people, the “cup” is full for oneself and their families, provided by a salary. Then, the contentment can reach out to enable and help others.

But another reader felt the advice the three coaches had brought to the table was uplifting and incredibly beneficial to anyone looking for a job and open to new ideas:

Thank you for today’s front page! It was so refreshing!
Having the opportunity to explore new jobs and a new career during these times is somewhat of a blessing. It’s often seen as such a negative experience, so it was uplifting to hear the positive approach. “Necessity is the Mother of creativity.” Whether you are an employee or an employer, these extraordinary times are calling on us to do things we would never have considered doing before. And this leads to positive growth, of an individual, of a company, of a nation.

  1. Hi Pat,

Offering career coaching was a great idea, but there is a lot more available than Linked-In to help job-seekers fight back. Not everyone can afford a career coach, and now they don’t have to. 25-year veteran Silicon Valley headhunter Brian Golter is celebrating the release of his new book, Your Right Job Right Now, with a book-signing party at Borders in Los Gatos this Saturday, June 27, from 1-4pm. The first 20 job-seekers who ask will receive a free registration to our upcoming seminars. And for other unemployed go-getters, we are so confident that our seminar will help them fast-track their job search, we will wait to get paid until they do!

As a testimonial, I attended Brian’s seminar in March, and was completely floored by the turnaround it set in motion for my life and career. I am now in the interview process for my dream job. In the meantime, I am working with Brian because I can’t wait to see others experience the epiphany and restoration that I found.

Whether they get in on our 20 free spots or pay the $45 for a transformational day, Your Right Job Right Now is the best deal out there for job seekers who are exhausted and wondering what to do. Read more at http://www.mybossjune.com.

We also invite you to come and cover one of our events or seminars and report your impressions in your column. Be our guest!

  2. I thought that the advice given from all three counslers was fantastic. The purpose seems to be to provide a fresh perspective on job hunting and it gives them an opportunity to change the way they present themselves. Some folks might not have the experience but yet present the attitude to succeed to fulfill the company’s need. I love the comparison that job hunting is exactly like a sales job….you are just marketing yourself to a company.

  3. I particularly liked what one coach said about leaving job seeker’s “objective” out of the resume. Because it is absolutely correct that “nobody cares!” I once attended the International Career Development Conference, where two career counselors both agreed with me that “Objective” could stay out while the most important job for the hiring manager is to find the most qualified person to fit the current
    position.
I am a job coach at a Career Center in a public library. My outreach service takes me to many places to offer job hunting workshops and mock interview workshops. Since 2007, our Career Center has regular monthly Job Clinics for Resume Makeover and Mock Interview. Log on on our “Job and Job Hunting” web page:www.fresnolibrary.org/jcs
