Brooklyn Teen Claims He Created Twitter Worm
An Internet news site called BNOnews said it has received an e-mail from an person who identified himself as a 17-year-old teenager named Mikeyy Mooney who unleashed a worm attack on Twitter this weekend “out of boredom.”
In a post on Sunday morning to Twitter’s official blog, co-founder Biz Stone said the worm began spreading at 2 a.m. on Saturday. During the course of the day, Twitter’s security team identified about 190 compromised accounts and deleted about 10,000 “Tweets,” or messages that could have been used to spread the word, Stone said.
Twitter, a popular micro-blogging site, lets people post short 140-character messages on their profile pages.
The initial worm promoted a site called StalkDaily.com, which Mooney also claimed to have created. Twitter advised people not to visit the site.
TechCrunch reported Saturday that the visiting a Twitter profile page of a person who had been infected with the worm caused the worm to spread. Infected users caused people to send out messages urging others to visit the StalkDaily.com site.
According to CNET, a variant of the worm sent out message like “Mikeyy I am done…,” “MikeyyMikeyy is done.,” and “Twitter please fix this, regards Mikeyy.”
Security firm F-Secure said the attack was an example of cross-site scripting, an exploit in which malicious coders add software to Web pages that are viewed by others.
Stone said no passwords, phone numbers or other sensitive data was compromised by the attack.
“Twitter takes security very seriously and we will be following up on all fronts,” Stone wrote, noting that a similar attack on MySpace ended with a felony conviction.
Mikko H. Hypponen, chief research officer of F-Secure, said people should be careful about viewing profiles and following links.
