Extreme Networks slips out layoff news

extreme-logoExtreme Networks revealed in a filing it made with the Securities and Exchange Commission 30 seconds before closing time Thursday that it has decided to cut 5 percent of its employees by the end of June. It also went on the record with the fact that, “earlier in the quarter, the Company reduced the number of employee positions at the Company by approximately 1% and exited a facility as part of the Company’s strategic plan.”

When it last reported the size of its workforce in September, Extreme had 861 employees, so based on that number it looks like the company is cutting about 50 jobs. The Santa Clara provider of networking infrastructure gear said it will record $2.3 million in mostly cash restructuring charges related to the actions, which include exiting one of the company’s facilities.

  1. 861 employees! That’s all they have now? Wow, hard to recall that Cisco took them as a very serious competitor back in the day. Cisco has something like 30,000+ employees, and Extreme has 800! Guess it’s all about the execution, eh?

  2. Extreme did it to themselves, they had a very hands off approach to most deployments and their sales channels were nonexistent. I never met a sales manager or engineer who actually new a thing about the product. They alienated 90% of their customer base in the late 90s when everything went EoL(was AWOL long before they quit selling it). Come mid 2000 you would be hard pressed to find a solid edge or core deployment that didn’t have recurring issues. The E-NSP mailing list is a great place to see how quick things went downhill. Most customers bought in because they were cheap and upgraded after the network “blew up” for the 100th time.
