NeurogesX said Thursday that the European Medicines Agency’s committee for medicinal products for human use has recommended approval of Qutenza, the San Mateo biopharmaceutical’s treatment of peripheral neuropathic pain in non-diabetic adults.

The drug is delivered via a “dermal patch designed to provide rapid, localized and sustained relief” from pain caused by damage to the peripheral nervous system.

The company said it will be working to finalize a relationship with a commercial partner in Europe “over the next few months” as it waits for what it hopes with a positive final decision by the European Commission.
