The people and companies driving the innovation of Silicon Valley

A pink-slip primer from San Jose - Part I

I’m hearing from all sorts of folks in Silicon Valley about to be laid off, recently laid off, laid off then working a new job only to be re-laid off. Linda Kahn is a 49-year-old San Jose woman who lost her job in January after 14 years with Franklin Templeton Investments. She has great on-the-ground advice for job-hunters. Here’s an initial dose, with more to follow:

It’s much easier to file on-line (unemployment). However, I guess all us ‘unemployed’ have to find out the hard way. You must have all your info ‘at hand’….difficult when you are using a computer NOT in your home.

Most library computers kick you off in 30 minutes….I should know. This is where I rushed through my unemployment form because my browser is old and the modem….too slow. You get 29 minutes before it shuts off, closes down, and you need to log in all over again. No saving anything on the EEOD page…..gotta start ALL OVER from the beginning.

You need all the dates and addresses, phone , etc., of the last place you worked. Then, they need to know ALL the payments you received from your company including:
vacaction
holiday
in-lieu-of payment (whatever THAT is)
Severance
other payments
Gross amount of last check
all including dates from when-to-when…
