Smart Modular announces new round of layoffs

smart-modular-logo1Smart Modular, the Fremont maker of storage chips, said it is planning to cut an other 5 percent to 7 percent of its employees, on top of the 19 percent it reported laying off in September.

The company reported having 1,466 employees at the end of its 2008 fiscal year on Aug. 29.

The job cuts follow by a day the news of layoffs at another Silicon Valley company, Rackable Systems, which said Tuesday it would be laying off 15 percent of its workforce, last reported to be 374 at the end of 2007.

    The number of layoffs in 2009 will more than double those in 2008. GE is planning is planning to layoff 22,000 employees. This will be announced soon. My brother is a senior manager there. Westinghouse will layoff 11,000 employees. Boeing will layoff an additional 3000 employees in the middle of 2009. Northrop will announce layoff of 6000 employees. Lockheed will do the same. More to come. Gas to down to $1 a gallon. Exxon will also announce layoffs. More retail outlets will be closed.
