Spending the day at Nvision 2008 in San Jose

I’m working remotely today at the first Nvision 2008 conference sponsored by Nvidia. One speaker termed it a “mega event” and I think that about sums it up. It’s spread over six large facilities in downtown San Jose (making parking a nightmare!). I’m currently listening to the keynote by Jen-Hsun Huang, cofounder, president and CEO of Nvidia give the opening keynote at the San Jose Center for Performing Arts.

It’s hard to describe exactly what Nvision is about, except “visual computing” which touches on everything from video games to just about any kind of digital imaging. In part, I’m really here to find out just what the heck the point of this thing is.

I’m not the chip expert at the Mercury News by any stretch. But I can say that the images being demonstrated during Huang’s keynote are stunning. Clearly the level of digital visualization is on a path to becoming far more complex and rich (think almost lifelike looking avatars in video games).

But even without knowing a lot about the underlying technology, there’s a lot here to fire the imagination. It’s just the kind of ridiculously ambitious event that belongs in Silicon Valley. I’m always glad to spend a few hours at a place that stokes my sense of wonder about the future.
