Monolithic prevails in most of patent suit brought by Linear
Monolithic Power says it was victorious in a contract dispute with Linear Technology, according to a press release it sent out late Tuesday evening.
Monolithic did not breach an October 1, 2005, agreement with Linear Technology that was a subject of the litigation, according to the release. Nor did it “willfully infringe” against the patent claims in the case of two patents asserted by Linear that were used in a Monolithic Power product that had been discontinued “more than 18 months earlier.”
However, the jury in the case (can you imagine having to not only listen to this case but pay attention as well?) did return a verdict that an evaluation board containing the previously discontinued product had directly infringed Linear’s patent claims, and that Linear’s patents referred to above are valid.
And Monolithic’s penalty for the above offense? $10.
As for the matters in which it prevailed, Monolithic says it “plans to seek recovery of substantial attorney fees and costs from Linear”, which we imagine will be north of $10.

How in the world did they come up with a number like $10 for a penalty? Honestly, that is more expensive than lunch. Sometimes law is ridiculous.
