Microsoft says ‘Halo 3’ to launch Sept. 25, tent camp begins forming in Best Buy parking lot

”Halo 3,” the next chapter in the Microsoft’s hugely popular video game franchise, is expected to hit store shelves Sept. 25.

The first-person science fiction shoot-‘um-up features an armor-clad human space soldier fighting alien hordes in sprawling single and online multiplayer battles.

”Halo” has proved to be the “killer app” for the Xbox, and Microsoft is counting on this installment to give the Xbox 360 a boost just in time for the holidays. Microsoft reported “Halo 2” sales of more than $120 million in just the first 24 hours of its release in 2004.

Xbox 360 owners who subscribe to the Xbox Live online service will be able to download a playable beta demo of “3” beginning at 5 a.m. Thursday that will run through June 16. The rest of us will have to make do with this video, released at CES 2007.
