Hello, hello dad, hi, I’m in jail; Say hi to mom, from jail

Seems my quip yesterday about former WorldCom CEO Bernie Ebbers bumming quarters to make phone calls from prison wasn’t all that far off. Robert Hilgemann, a former state representative from Missouri, wrote in yesterday to point out that MCI-WorldCom is very much in the prison telephone business. “They contract with many states to run a collect telephone business from correctional institutions,” Hilgemann notes. “The calls are billed to the family and friends called by those who are incarcerated. It is a profit maker for the state institutions and the charges billed family and friends are quite expensive when compared to other 800 collect type services.” Nice.
