TiVo obituary shelved for time being

For months now, TiVo has been dogged by questions about its ability to survive as an independent amid growing competition from satellite TV and cable providers, but now it appears the DVR pioneer may be with us for just a little while longer — and not just as a verb. The company’s finally managed to strike a deal with Comcast, one that will bring its DVR service to the cable giant’s 21.5 million subscribers. The arrangement is a huge victory for TiVo, which has long struggled to forge an alliance with a cable-TV company. Shares of the company, which declined 60 percent in the past year as investors questioned its continued viability, spiked this morning, rising more than 50 percent to $5.47 at the time of this writing.
